RICK CARTER
I am interested in the interplay between nature and nurture—what we’re born with and what shapes us—what is natural and what is cultivated. My practice draws inspiration from the rural landscape of my childhood, documented through my aerial photography—the rolling expanses of the local hinterland—and the immersive layers of my own garden. The work becomes a meditation on creation itself—undulating between representation and abstraction—evoking a sense of peace, a longing to connect, and simply be in nature. For me, gardening and art are closely connected. The earth as a kind of canvas and plants as the materials for building compositions shaped by color, texture, form, and mood. Both are physical and meditative—they engage the senses, still the mind, and offer a space for exploration and expression. It is less about capturing what the eye sees and more about expressing what the body feels, the emotional resonance of being within the landscape, whether it be in my own garden or out in nature. Grounded in place, shaped by memory, and imbued with emotion, I seek to create landscapes that are both deeply personal and quietly universal.
