In 'Wallflower’, artist Misha Harrison presents a captivating world of still life woodcut artworks that invite viewers to delve into the intricate interplay of materiality, form, and artistic expression. Inspired by the 19th-century Art and Craft Movement, Harrison champions the idea that handmade creations possess a unique depth of character often absent in mass-produced objects.

Materiality plays a central role in 'Wallflower’, serving as the cornerstone of Harrison's artistic exploration. Each artwork stands as a testament to her mastery of materials and techniques, with plywood serving as her primary medium. This unassuming material, typically associated with construction and craft, undergoes a remarkable transformation under Harrison's skillful guidance. Plywood emerges as a challenging medium, particularly when subjected to intricate detailing. Its inherent qualities, robust in its natural state, give way to fragility and brittleness as Harrison crafts it. Nevertheless, she embraces these material constraints as opportunities for creative exploration, often employing unconventional techniques like the innovative use of power tools, such as the router, to shape textures, patterns, and forms that define her unique artistic vision.

Within her artistic process, Harrison seamlessly blends labor-intensive practices like cutting, carving, and sanding—traditionally regarded as 'masculine' pursuits in history—with the delicate art of embroidery. Embroidery, beyond its aesthetic value, pays homage to feminism and its vital role in artistic discourse. Once marginalized in fine art due to its association with femininity and perceived irrelevance, embroidery now stands as a symbol of empowerment and inclusivity. Harrison's fusion of traditionally gendered trajectories transcends the evolving gender roles within the art world and speaks to broader societal transformations.

'Wallflower' stands as a testament to the convergence of materiality, form, and artistic interpretation within Harrison's creative journey. She adeptly navigates the intricate dance between craftsmanship and creativity, challenging conventions, and broadening perspectives. Her works go beyond artistic creations; they embody narratives where the handmade prevails in a world where mass production often takes precedence.

Through 'Wallflower,' Harrison extends an invitation to viewers to explore a fresh perspective on the timeless genre of still life. She reimagines the conventions of traditional still life, breathing new life into its established boundaries.

Harrison's aspiration for 'Wallflower' is to foster a deep appreciation for the beauty found in the details of life. She invites you to join her on this artistic journey, exploring 'Wallflower' together, and celebrating the interplay of materiality, form, and artistic expression within the contemporary art landscape.
