Sydney Road Gallery is excited to share Fiona Chandlers long awaited solo show - representing 2 years of trips, travels & exploring the possibilities of watercolour.
“All Smiles No Camera is my ode to those moments of overwhelming joy and exuberance that come from simply sitting and pondering the elements of happenstance and luck so prevalent in the natural world… The unlikely architectural shapes that have formed over millions of years, the essential role gravity plays, the technicolour beauty that shifts and changes with the light.
As a landscape artist, the position I paint from is always based on the memories imprinted by magical places I have ventured to and spent time absorbing, which I overlay with the familiarity of the majestic and diverse Australian landscape.
Significant in scale, all 10 paintings in this exhibition were created using watercolour on canvas, with the subtle washes, vibrant hues and fine lines that have come to define my signature style adding depth and texture. My process allows me to really push the medium of watercolour, which I have been experimenting with for the past 25 years and have an absolute passion for.
My objective is to evoke memories, to invite questions, to encourage those viewing my work to find connection and feel moved to share their own stories about the places that resonate deeply with them.
What I find most rewarding is that many conversations come about because of my chosen medium – viewers often can’t believe that I work with watercolour and, after all these years, I am in constant awe of the outcomes that can be achieved with these versatile and vastly underrated pigments”
