LEIGH BINSKIN
My work explores the emotional landscape of place, memory, and belonging. Deeply influenced by my Scottish heritage and my chosen life in Australia, my practice reflects a strong connection to everyday objects, personal histories, and the layered stories embedded in the spaces we inhabit. At the heart of my work is a desire to honour legacy and evoke a sense of shared history—both personal and cultural. I create evocative compositions by layering historic photographs, handwritten notes, and my own sketches beneath transparent acrylic glazes. These elements act as archaeological layers, revealing fragments of lives lived, places loved, and moments remembered. Through this process, I weave visual stories that invite nostalgia and sentimentality, encouraging viewers to connect with the past in a way that feels both intimate and collective. Artwork - Drifting Inviting a quiet moment of reflection, where memory, environment, and emotion converge. Fragmented historical images of the Pittwater area form the grounding collage, offering a textured sense of place. Transparent acrylic glazes flow over the surface, evoking the rhythm and fluidity of water. This piece reflects a feeling of being deeply connected yet unburdened—attuned to one’s surroundings without the pressure of direction or purpose. Artwork – Wind in Your Sails If the ocean is the vast world of possibility ahead, then let the wind be the force that carries you toward it. This work captures the exhilarating momentum of forward motion—when energy, intention, and environment align. Layered with fragmented historical images of Pittwater, the collage anchors the work in a sense of place, while transparent acrylic glazes express the movement of wind and water. Artwork – Crossing Points A reflection on connection and memory. This artwork layers a solitary dinghy over archival images of the Spit Bridge, evoking the crossings—both physical and emotional—that link past and present, land and sea.
