Alex Thorby is a Northern beaches based artist. She completed a Certificate of Fine Art at Meadowbank Tafe and a Bachelor of Art Education and Post Graduate Diploma, at City Art Institute (UNSW) ,Sydney.
Thorby also spent time studying under Graeme Inson, whose tonal philosophy of "maximum effect from minimum brush strokes" continues to influence her approach to painting.
Her work was shown in the Margaret Olley Retrospective, AGNSW and she has been selected as a finalist in multiple art prizes including The Archibald prize, Doug Moran Portrait prize , Salon des refuses S H Ervin Gallery, the Portia Geach Portrait prize and the Paddington Art Prize.
Alex Thorby is represented in the permanent collections of the AGNSW, Margaret Olley Trust Sydney, State Library NSW, New England Regional Gallery NSW.
