Birds of Paradise

In this series of six photographic works, Nanda explores the striking form of the Birds of Paradise flower through layered photography. By overlapping multiple images within a single frame, she creates compositions rich in transparency, depth, and movement—inviting curiosity and imagination to unfold.

Balancing simplicity and complexity, the works draw attention to the colours, contours, and textures inherent in nature. They also question the ephemeral nature of beauty: while each flower is finite, its essence persists and re-emerges. In this cycle, Nanda reflects on how familiarity and the pace of contemporary daily life can dull our perception of what is inherently extraordinary.

Through the use of layering, different perspectives and individual moments coexist, drawing the viewer into a more attentive and inquisitive gaze. The images take on a dreamlike atmosphere, and the vibrant natural colours, evoke a quiet sense of joy. In this series, Nanda encourages the viewer to contemplate the overlooked beauty of the familiar and to reawaken a more intentional way of seeing.

Nanda Nasser is a Sydney-based visual artist whose practice is shaped by both intellectual inquiry and visual exploration. Holding a degree in Psychology along with postgraduate studies in Visual Arts and Contemporaneity, Nanda is interested in the intricate relationship between people, nature and God, as well as in the paradox of the simplicity and complexity of existence.

With 25 years’ experience in photography, Nanda combines knowledge with experimentation to create a series of images that visually present a narrative. She often makes use of techniques that explore movement, fluidity and overlapping of images, and frequently contrasts vivid colours with the classic black and white.

Nanda’s body of works are comprised of both conceptual and substantial photographs that purposely strive to portray the subject in a deep and meaningful light, retaining a unique playfulness about them at times.

Nanda has participated in numerous Art Exhibitions in Australia and in Brazil. She is an Associate Artist to Sydney Road Gallery and the curator for the Echoes Photo Exhibition.
