These three still-life artworks – ‘Apple Blossom’, ‘Lemon Lavender’ and ‘Pear Posie’ – form part of a mini-series I call ‘Fruit Florescence’. Each piece shines a spotlight on a humble and familiar fruit, putting it centre-stage and showcasing it against a complementary floral backdrop. The fruits’ beauty is enhanced by its setting such that each fruit is metaphorically blooming. Each piece is a solo study, focused on the way the light illuminates the fruit’s organic form against a sweet floral tablecloth. These joyful artworks are a contemporary take on the timeless, classic combination of fruits and florals. They are proudly and unapologetically feminine in their subject-matter, as well as in their spirit; they are bright, bold, fierce and fun. I like to view this mini-series as a little nod to girl power and the wondrous botanical life cycle of fruit-bearing flowering plants.
