Ben Randall
Painting is my way of expressing and reflecting on the little things in life that move me; like wind brushing between the trees, bees humming over flowers and clouds dancing across the sky. Or it may be of an old memory, like baking a cake with my grandmother or sitting on a rocky outcrop in a National Park, alone but present. These small, intimate moments bring me joy. Through my brush strokes, I work layers of colour into the canvas, as I try to hold onto those moments of life. My work is about noticing what might be easily missed and help offer a sense of grounding to our daily routines. I mix linseed oil and solvent to enhance the viscosity of the paint. Brush strokes and thick applications of paint are seen and promoted by me. I want my art to be tactile as well as visual. These three works have evolved out of a controlled desperation and a desire to create something that comes from deep within not just me but all humans, and throughout 2025 I have been furthering my study on colours and how that help form emotive states in our minds. I wish for the viewer to be drawn in and lost in my work. And with each subsequent look, I hope they find something else they love – it might be a brushstroke they may have not seen, or a hidden layer that is only revealed after viewing the work up close. "Happiness Will Make You Wonder" is a reminder to slow down and see the beauty that’s always around us. "Little Fish, Big Pond" harks on that even if you may feel small, we all have the opportunity to learn and be amazing. "Rocky Road and Cupcakes" theme is based on being wary of having too much pleasure and excess.
